In a crowded craft brewing industry, a relatively new Cincinnati beer maker is taking no prisoners. The fast-growing brewery outgrew its original facility within two years of opening and had to find a bigger space.

MadTree Brewing LLC is a craft brewery in Cincinnati. Three home-brew aficionados – Brady Duncan, Jeff Hunt and Kenny McNutt – founded the brewery in 2011 with the vision to become the premier craft brewer in the Midwest while also promising to take care of their employees and the community. MadTree began selling beer in 2013 and has quickly become one of the fastest growing breweries in Ohio, producing 19,000 barrels of beer in 2016.

When building the original MadTree brewery, Duncan, Hunt and McNutt did not anticipate the insatiable thirst of the community. The brewery’s original Columbia Township location in the greater Cincinnati region provided little room for expansion as the company struggled to meet demand. After a short two years in operation, it became apparent that the brewery needed more space and bigger, better equipment.

MadTree’s founders knew they wanted to stay true to their Cincinnati roots and their vision to improve the community when planning what they call “MadTree 2.0.” They found a 50,000-square-foot facility, formerly the RockTenn paper plant, that allowed the company to quadruple its production. But the building required significant remediation and renovation, including removal of asbestos. Together, JobsOhio and REDI Cincinnati supported MadTree with a revitalization loan and revitalization grant to remediate and renovate the former paper plant. In February 2017, MadTree officially opened its new facility. It features a 100-barrel brewhouse, a larger taproom, a beer garden and private event space. More than 15,000 people attended the grand opening.
