Ohio Space Forum: Leaders Gather to Find a Path to Space
A renewed emphasis on space exploration has illuminated the scientific and technical benefits of such an endeavor and the economic opportunities associated with it.
Companies that want to benefit from this movement are finding fertile ground in Ohio, which was on full display at this year’s Ohio Space Forum.
JobsOhio recently joined hundreds of leaders from government, military, academia, and industry gathered in Cleveland for the Ohio Space Forum to explore the opportunities available to Ohio companies from critical space-related missions. JobsOhio, once again a major sponsor of the forum, supports these missions as part of its Military & Federal Sector.
Each year, the Ohio Space Forum provides every attendee the chance to gather among nationally recognized leaders in space intelligence, exploration, and defense to benefit from their expertise. It is an annual event to learn more about growth opportunities for businesses in Ohio as we continue to support our nation’s vital space missions.
Ohio's Strategic Approach: An Ecosystem for Success
In recent discussions about economic development in Ohio, there's been a significant focus on the state's approach to fostering the space industry. Unlike other states that pour millions of dollars into large-scale projects, Ohio has adopted a multifaceted strategy to create an environment that promotes and sustains success for all space industry partners.
Ohio's strategy involves advocating for federal missions, securing federal funding, and attracting and growing industries, particularly space. We have strong partners who help with advocacy and work towards a unified goal. Here’s a breakdown of our strategy:
- Advocating for Federal Missions: We focus on supporting federal missions in military and federal sectors.
- Securing Federal Funding: Our efforts include obtaining federal funds from various agencies.
- Attracting and Growing Industry: We aim to attract and nurture industries, especially in space, through strategic investments and partnerships.
Ohio's Unique Position & the Opportunities it Affords
Unlike states known for specific space-related activities, Ohio is a diverse state with multiple interests that create a diverse set of opportunities for the companies that do business here. Our investments are not limited to a single sector but span microelectronics, advanced air mobility, automotive, and more. For instance, Ohio played a crucial role in passing the CHIPS Act, leading to Intel's significant investment in the state and establishing an ecosystem of related suppliers and innovation that drives a whole new sector of the economy.

Speaking with One Voice
During the Ohio Space Forum, there was a strong emphasis on unity and collaboration. We have a clear strategy from Governor DeWine’s office, and various organizations are working together to advocate for, attract, and grow the space industry in Ohio. This collaborative effort ensures we all move in the same direction, leveraging our diverse strengths.
Reflecting on the Space Forum, it's impressive to see how far we've come in achieving a landscape of fertile ground for companies to grow and succeed in Ohio. The forum has grown significantly since its inception five years ago despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's event, with 315 attendees and numerous sponsors, was a testament to Ohio's leadership in the space industry.
Ohio’s Continued Leadership
Ohio has proven itself as a foundation for contractors and primes, supplying major aerospace companies like Boeing and Airbus. Our manufacturing history and innovative spirit position us well to support and lead in the space industry. Ohio's involvement in space goes beyond launching and building rockets; we focus on enabling life and operations in space.
Moving Forward
Our approach to economic development and the space industry is comprehensive and strategic. We recognize that our investments differ from other states, and we see this as a strength. By working together, leveraging federal funds, and fostering partnerships, Ohio continues to move forward, driving innovation and economic growth.
Ohio’s strategy in economic development and the space industry is about smart investments, collaboration, and leveraging our unique strengths. Together, we are making Ohio a leader in the space industry, ensuring a prosperous future for our state and the leaders, innovators, and dreamers who come here to build pathways to the stars.
